Irving Radiological Associates, PA
In August 1997, MedSynergies Surgical Division was referred to the radiologists at Irving Radiological Associates, P.A. (IRA) a nine physician group. The group had their own management services organization (billing, contracting, accounting) but requested MedSynergies Surgical Division to evaluate the effectiveness of their internal services. The group had experienced a significant decline in collections and was considering outsourcing billing services to Medaphis Corporation, a third party billing organization.
MedSynergies Surgical Division evaluated coding, reviewed information management systems, reviewed billing processes and analyzed managed care reimbursements based on contracts in place. MedSynergies Surgical Division also evaluated staff and human resource issues. Based on the analysis, MedSynergies Surgical Division suggested that outsourcing the billing functions would not yield significant improvement since many issues including items such as charge capture, coding, and reimbursement would not be effectively addressed by a billing company.
In addition, MedSynergies Surgical Division suggested that as a significant practice entity, the group should own its own systems and have immediate access to its own patient information. MedSynergies Surgical Division also suggested that based on our review, staff required additional training and the group should consider replacing its proprietary billing system. During our review, MedSynergies Surgical Division immediately began the process of implementing changes designed to improve charge capture.
In response to the review, IRA asked MedSynergies Surgical Division to implement the recommended changes and to assume management of its administrative services. As a result, within a few months MedSynergies Surgical Division was able to increase collections by approximately 40%, improve contract compliance, enhance operational and financial reporting, and significantly enhance the performance of the group.
