Case Studies

MedSynergies' case studies demonstrate some of the features and performance capabilities of our products and services.

A Success Story: Jackson Neurosurgery Center

Mississippi based Jackson Neurosurgery began in 1999. The practice employs 18 Staff/Physicians and is recognized as a top practice in the region.

Situation
Jackson Neurosurgery, like most practices, was limited in their access to specific financial performance information of their growing healthcare organization. Constrained by the limitations of their current billing system, little or no data was available from which the practice could base decisions concerning improved operational efficiencies and revenue growth. Jackson wanted to know more about their denials but they had to rely on manual processing and analysis. “To move from great performance to exceptional performance, we needed more than just a billing service. The value of the information contained in the MedSynergies reports gives us the knowledge necessary to make better informed decisions when working with our claims,” said Zoe Gasc, Practice Administrator for Jackson Neurosurgery.

Jackson Neurosurgery’s dependence on their billing system could impede their ability to continue delivering first-class service so the practice wanted to find ways to streamline the claim submission process, gain control of their accounts receivable operations, and grow revenue. The practice was working diligently to resolve their denials; however, there was no data available documenting the number and frequency of their denial types. Additional information requests, verification of benefits, and insurance contractual issues were their top 3 denial reasons; however, their previous revenue solution did not provide this information.

To achieve visibility into their practice performance and to improve their financial performance, Jackson Neurosurgery Center implemented the MedSynergies Revenue Cycle Outsourcing solution.

We are now better able to hone in on additional revenue opportunities within a shorter period of time.

Zoe Gasc, Practice Administrator

Metrics
Since May, 2003, the practice has increased their cash flow by 20% and significantly improved their average A/R days. “We’ve gained a greater visibility into the financial health of our practice and the unprecedented level of control offered by MedSynergies has had a positive effect on the bottom line for our practice,” said Gasc. “We are now better able to hone in on additional revenue opportunities within a shorter period of time.” Jackson Neurosurgery also uses the RVU metric to gauge certain performance levels. By using the data in Appointment Reconciliation reports, the practice could focus efforts on improving their payment per RVU metric.

Solution
To better manage their denials, Jackson Neurosurgery focused their efforts on assessing the format of their electronic claims. By analyzing MedSynergies Business Analytics™ reports, Jackson Neurosurgery was able to assess how many charges were being rejected during the front-end data analysis and formatting. Grouping similar denials allowed for a faster submission of corrected claims. In addition, using data from the Appointment Reconciliation reports helped to prevent inefficient scheduling conflicts. As a result, physician scheduling was optimized and the number of unreconciled appointments was reduced. “The number of charges without appointments has been significantly reduced. This has enabled us to leverage more time to treat patients and focus on resolving our denials in a more efficient manner,” said Gasc.

Results
As a result of Jackson Neurosurgery’s efforts, they have had a record month with regard to revenue. Providing this early detection of denial reasons has given Jackson Neurosurgery the tools necessary to decrease the number of ‘verification of benefits’ denials by 50%. ‘Insurance contractual issues’ denial types have also decreased by 50%. In addition to enhancing revenue, the RVU metric for Jackson Neurosurgery has also improved. “By utilizing the efficiencies of the MedSyergies solutions, we’ve increased our payment per RVU by over 37%,” said Jackson Neurosurgery’s Dr. Adam Lewis. As a result of the increased operational efficiencies we’ve gained, we’ve recently increased our physician staff which further positions us for future revenue growth,” added Lewis.
